When given a choice: accommodate for Cuban communists OR fight for religious liberty and economic freedom, President Obama sides with dictators. Today's shameful decision by the Obama Administration to remove the Castro regime from our list of state sponsors of terrorism is wrong. As president, I will lead with moral clarity, defend basic human rights, and hold rogue regimes accountable.

Today, ISIS terrorists wave black flags and decapitate innocent civilians in cities where American soldiers courageously and selflessly shed blood. As the White House makes excuses, the ISIS cancer keeps metastasizing across the Middle East. Enough is enough--America is the leader of the Free World, and it's time we accept responsibility, restore moral clarity and lead. Crisis-management and finger pointing is NOT a strategy.

You know, people these days are awfully spoiled. We think we’re making a big sacrifice if our hotel room doesn’t have free wi-fi. But Memorial Day is about honoring the men and women of the US military who truly made the greatest of all sacrifices to secure our liberty.

Memorial Day was born after the Civil War, when families would take a day to tend and decorate the graves of Confederate soldiers. It soon spread to the North, and became known as Decoration Day. Eventually, it became a national holiday to honor all American military veterans who gave up their homes, their families, their very lives -- everything they had, or ever dreamed of having – and sacrificed it all for their country. And just how many have made the ultimate sacrifice? Brace yourself.

From the Revolutionary War to the War of 1812, the Civil War and Spanish American war, World Wars I and II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, and all the other wars, police actions and rescue missions since 1776, over one million, three hundred and eight thousand Americans in uniform have laid down their lives for their country. Imagine if all those soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen could come back to life for a parade in their honor. Picture them marching past in rows of ten, each row taking just 10 seconds to pass. That parade of fallen heroes would march on and on, row after row, hour after hour, 24 hours a day, for over 15 straight days. That is the enormity of the sacrifice that has been made to preserve our freedom and security. That doesn’t even include the millions more who gave their limbs, their sight, and the best years of their lives, all for us. These heroes gave their lives for American principles such as freedom, liberty, equality, democracy, fighting tyranny and defending the weak. Bedrock principles that they passed down to us. It is now our sacred duty to preserve them for future generations.

Every Memorial Day, the VFW sells poppy pins. I hope you’ll buy one and wear it proudly. The poppy became the symbol of Memorial Day, thanks to the famous poem, “In Flanders’ Fields,” by Canadian Lt. Col. John McCrae. He wrote it in memory of his friend Alexis Helmer, whom he watched die in battle in World War I. The poem goes, “In Flanders’ fields, the poppies blow, between the crosses, row on row.”

Today, as we fly our flags, attend parades, visit veterans’ hospitals and tend the graves of our loved ones, let’s stop to think of all the rows and rows of crosses in veterans’ cemeteries, and remember that each and every cross represents a genuine American hero.

McCrae’s poem ends, “To you, from failing hands, we throw the torch. Be yours, to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die, we shall not sleep, though poppies grow in Flanders’ fields.” If you really want to memorialize these greatest of American heroes, then take up the torch they passed to us. Hold it high. And NEVER let it drop.

Today is Memorial Day, a day when we remember all the heroic men and women of the United States military who gave their lives to protect our freedom. This may be a particularly poignant Memorial Day. For some, it will be especially sad, because events in the news remind us of how many Americans sacrificed their lives and limbs to fight Islamic radicals in the Middle East, only to see wrong-headed policies pull defeat from the jaws of victory. It’s also especially historic because this year marks the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. That war took the lives of between 50 and 80 million civilians and over 16 million Allied soldiers. More than 407,000 of them were Americans. Now, after seven decades, even among those who made it home alive, there are fewer and fewer still with us.

They may not have fallen in battle, but they deserve our thoughts, thanks and prayers, as well. Like Elaine Harmon of Rockville, Maryland. She was part of the Women’s Airforce Service Pilots, or WASPS. If you never heard of the WASPS, it’s not surprising. All records of the program were classified for 35 years.

During World War II, with every male pilot needed overseas, women were recruited to fly planes from factories to their dispatch points. Over 25,000 women applied for training. Just 1,074 earned their wings. One of them was Elaine Harmon. The government required at least one parent to give permission for their daughters to fly military planes. Elaine’s mother refused. She said it was “unladylike!” But her dad signed the letter and sent it right back. The WASPS delivered planes and cargo, trained male pilots and actually pulled the targets for anti-aircraft practice shooting. Thirty-eight WASP pilots died during the war. But they were denied veteran status or military funerals. Their families weren’t allowed to fly the gold star flag to mark their deaths, and even had to pay to have their bodies sent home.

It wasn’t until the 1970s that they were granted veteran status. In 1984, they or their survivors finally received World War II Victory Medals. And in 2009, the surviving WASPS were at long last awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. One of those, of course, was Elaine Harmon, who, after a lifetime of service and adventure -- including bungee-jumping at age 80 -- passed away last month at 95.

On this Memorial Day, let’s remember the WASPS, and all the other American military heroes who stepped up and put their lives on the line for us. And let’s continue to honor their legacy by telling their amazing and inspiring stories to our children and grandchildren.

We’re headed into Memorial Day weekend. That means more than just picnics and sales and the start of summer. It’s a time to offer tribute, prayers and thanks to the heroic men and women of America’s military who for over two centuries have laid down their lives to protect our freedoms.

But we should also remember the many wounded warriors who survived the battles, but came home with deep and lasting scars. They deserve the very best care we can give them. Not only through the Veterans Administration, but through private aid groups, like K9s For Warriors. It’s a non-profit group that provides service dogs to vets with PTSD, traumatic brain injuries and other disabilities, to help them return to civilian life with independence and dignity. 100 percent of individual donations go to the program. And 95 percent of the service dogs they train are rescued from shelters. So when you donate to them, you don’t just help a veteran, you save a dog, too. Talk about doubling your money! Janet and I want to affirm our support for the Duggar family. Josh’s actions when he was an underage teen are as he described them himself, 'inexcusable,' but that doesn’t mean 'unforgivable.' He and his family dealt with it and were honest and open about it with the victims and the authorities. No purpose whatsoever is served by those who are now trying to discredit Josh or his family by sensationalizing the story. Good people make mistakes and do regrettable and even disgusting things. The reason that the law protects disclosure of many actions on the part of a minor is that the society has traditionally understood something that today’s blood-thirsty media does not understand—that being a minor means that one's judgement is not mature. No one needs to defend Josh’s actions as a teenager, but the fact that he confessed his sins to those he harmed, sought help, and has gone forward to live a responsible and circumspect life as an adult is testament to his family’s authenticity and humility. Those who have enjoyed revealing this long ago sins in order to discredit the Duggar family have actually revealed their own insensitive bloodthirst, for there was no consideration of the fact that the victims wanted this to be left in the past and ultimately a judge had the information on file destroyed—not to protect Josh, but the innocent victims. Janet and I love Jim Bob and Michelle and their entire family. They are no more perfect a family than any family, but their Christian witness is not marred in our eyes because following Christ is not a declaration of our perfection, but of HIS perfection. It is precisely because we are all sinners that we need His grace and His forgiveness. We have been blessed to receive God’s love and we would do no less than to extend our love and support for our friends. In fact, it is such times as this, when real friends show up and stand up. Today, Janet and I want to show up and stand up for our friends. Let others run from them. We will run to them with our support.

Monday is Memorial Day, a day to pay tribute to military veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedoms. Sadly, some Americans abuse those freedoms while showing no appreciation for those who risk their lives to secure them. Like the vandals in Evanston, Wyoming, who targeted Army Reserve automated logistical specialist Cassie McEuen.

She awoke last Sunday to find anti-military graffiti spray-painted across the front of her home. The vandals wrote “Die for what?,” an obscene anti-military insult, and the words “Home of a Soilder” – no surprise, these geniuses misspelled “soldier.” Ms McEuen took it in stride. She just notified the sheriff and mentioned it on her Facebook page.

But that’s when word spread to Nick Arnold of the group 307 Long Range. Many of their members are also veterans. They’d just finished a big community clean-up project, and Nick knew they were exhausted. But he wrote a post saying that if anyone wanted to join him in cleaning off that graffiti, to meet him at McEuen’s home in an hour. He hoped that maybe 10 people would show up. Instead, a crowd of over a hundred appeared. Local businesses donated free cleaning supplies. Together, they scrubbed off every last molecule of that moronic anti-military malarkey.

Arnold said he knows there are people who do things like that. But he hopes this shows that there are also a thousand times more Americans who support our soldiers and the Constitution and everything they fight for. Personally, I’d bet it’s closer to 10,000 times more.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I love Iowa. My goal is to run a well-funded, well-organized, and well-executed campaign to do extremely well in the Iowa caucuses in 2016.

In 2008, I competed and finished second in the Iowa straw poll – our first big break on our way to winning the Iowa caucuses and receiving the most votes ever cast for a Republican in the history of the Iowa caucuses. But to win in 2016, it's important to learn from the mistakes of the last few election cycles, in which conservatives were divided and opened a path for a more moderate establishment candidate to ultimately win the nomination, only to lose to Obama. Read more here:

While local law enforcement officials have no need for bunker-busting bombs or aging F-16s, the Obama Administration has a dangerous track record on radical mandates, runaway czars, and overreaching executive orders, particularly at the Department of Justice. When it comes to firearms and weapons, this Administration plays fast-and-loose with the words 'registration,' 'regulation,' and 'confiscation,' and I have some serious concerns with today's announcement. I trust local government over federal government to enact and enforce gun laws.

Even as rescuers were still pulling passengers from the wreckage, liberals were rushing to cameras and keyboards to blame the crash on Republicans not spending enough tax money on Amtrak. If only they’d spent more on advanced safety systems or better rail infrastructure, this wouldn’t have happened! That attack overlooks two inconvenient facts. First, investigators now believe the most likely cause of the crash wasn’t mechanical failure due to budget cuts, but that the engineer was heading into a curve at more than twice the speed limit. Second, Amtrak is already one of the biggest money pits in the budget.
Sean Davis of the government watchdog Media Trackers had a former classmate in that train crash, and was upset at the attempt to politicize it. So he looked up the numbers. You can find his article online at TheFederalist.com. He discovered that since Amtrak was created in 1971, it’s run up over $31 billion in losses, all covered by the taxpayer. In 2013 alone, it lost $1.3 billion on our dime. Or rather, on 13 billion of our dimes. And what are we all paying for? Davis notes that it’s mostly used in the Northeast, so the rest of the nation is subsidizing commuters who make more money on average than they do. And because it’s run by the federal government, Amtrak is inefficiently managed and spends far more on salaries and pensions than on infrastructure. In 2013, Amtrak spent over $2 billion on salaries and recorded less than $690 million in infrastructure depreciation. Pension losses alone that year hit $425 million.
Davis’ proposed solution is to just give Amtrak to some private rail company that can run it at a profit. You might think that’s too radical. But whatever the solution is to preventing derailments like this one, it doesn’t lie in pouring even more tax money into a bottomless pit. Unless that money is used to buy more speed limit signs.
